Once
fish processing building, today - beautiful
vacation villa
After the Second World War, at the beginning of the fifties of the last century, on the Croatian coast and islands, 22 factories operated, evenly distributed from Umag to Slano, near Dubrovnik. The process of shutting them down started in the early sixties.
The first such factory on the northern Adriatic islands was opened in Cres in 1896. It was owned by Societa Generale Francaise, and operated under the name Plavica until 1995.

Importance of
Factory for the island
and islanders
For Cres, the factory was of great importance: it provided income for the workers, but also the safe placement of fish to fishermen, so it directly or indirectly contributed easier life in the city and on the island.
It was done exclusively by hand. A large part of the fish was preserved by salting, which it was a seasonal business that depended on catching bluefish.
The factory has gone through different stages throughout its hundred years of operation. It was not always profitable, but it was maintained until 1997 when, along with a number of other problems, poorly executed privatization marked its end.
